Media Literacy Workshop: Creating Media in Cross-Cultural Contexts

This interactive workshop explored the media’s role in shaping ideology, the complexities of cross-cultural communication, and challenges such as echo chambers, misinformation, and perception bias. Rather than a lecture, this was a discussion-based session where participants critically engaged with these issues and brainstormed more thoughtful ways to create and consume media.

This event provided a snapshot of the current U.S.-China relationship and examined how it resonates at the local level, connecting communities across the country with U.S. policymakers and China experts. Danni Shuai, founder of Houlang Media, served as the lead organizer on behalf of the USC U.S.-China Institute in partnership with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. Members of the Houlang global team contributed to programming and photography support.

Andrew Dubbins : How to Conduct Interviews and Write Articles

Andrew Dubbins is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Smithsonian, Slate, The Daily Beast, and more. He is the author of Into Enemy Waters and was named “Journalist of the Year” by the Los Angeles Press Club in 2020. Andrew holds a B.A. from Georgetown and an M.A. in Journalism from USC. In this session, Andrew shared his insights on conducting empathetic and effective interviews and writing compelling narrative articles. He also hosted a Q&A at the end.

Houlang Media invited three exceptional cross-cultural storytellers—Yi (Ian) Chen, Jincheng (Jordyn) Zhang, and Koen Smeets—to share their experiences, challenges, and insights on navigating media, identity, and global dialogue through storytelling.
