About Us

About Houlang Media

Houlang Media is a youth-led initiative founded by media students and young professionals from around the world. Through ongoing cross-cultural conversations (documentary interviews, cross-border online discussions, and hands-on media workshops), we provide a platform for students (18-25) to explore cultural nuance and share their own stories. Our mission is to empower the next generation of media practitioners to engage the world with empathy, curiosity, and critical thinking.

Our name, Houlang (后浪), literally means “rear wave” in English, referring to the younger generation or Gen Z. The term gained prominence in 2020 after a viral speech video on Bilibili, a Chinese video platform, that celebrated the vibrant lives of young people. However, it also sparked widespread debate, as many in China criticized it for portraying only an elite minority, failing to reflect the realities of most youth.

With this in mind, Houlang Media seeks to redefine “Houlang” as an inclusive concept—one that amplifies diverse young voices across socio-economic and ideological backgrounds.
